About the programme

A lot of lives depend on the systems we maintain and deliver. So, we need to make sure they are safe, even if something goes wrong.

On this programme, you’ll learn about how to identify, analyse, safeguard and mitigate against hazards, failures and faults. In the process, you’ll develop your understanding of everything from production and manufacturing to project management, design and safety.

Safety Engineering at Babcock

The aim of this programme is to give you a broad education in all areas of safety engineering that will enable you to choose a specialism at the end of the programme. This will involve placements at several of our sites and projects, and training with safety case authors, human factors consultants and engineers of all disciplines. There will also be opportunities to work with other specialists, such as those in environmental management.

Your work will support the safe design, construction, operation and decommissioning of Royal Navy submarines.

What you'll need

  • You’ll need to be degree educated in a STEM discipline.
  • Many of our early careers roles are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which roles you are eligible for. For our early careers roles, you must be able to achieve BPSS and many of them require you to be eligible for Security Clearance.

Where you'll be based

Places on our Safety Engineering programme for Autumn 2025 are available in our Nuclear sector in Bristol. We ask our graduates to be flexible as there is the potential to undertake placements in other locations during their programme.

Our business in Bristol is a key strategic partner to our customers – the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy can carry out its operational tasking safely by sustaining the submarines through life with updates, design and documentation, upgrade and overhauls. We are developing innovative Operations Centres, technology insertion programmes, predictive data analytics and visualisation and training aids using games engine technologies.

Your home base will be in our Bristol office in Stoke Gifford, but some of your placements may be at other locations.
