Frequently Asked Questions - Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships

In the simplest terms, an apprenticeship is a work-based training programme that lets you earn while you learn. Apprenticeships combine elements of education, training and employment to equip you with the skills for a successful career.

Anyone! Apprenticeships are open to anyone with the required qualifications, from school leavers onwards.

Apprentices receive the same pension and holiday allowance as employees. You will also enjoy dedicated training to help you develop your personal and team-working skills. Find out more about apprentice Rewards and Benefits.

The specific qualification you receive will depend on your chosen apprenticeship.

Your apprenticeship can run from 2 to 6 years depending on your chosen apprenticeship. Each scheme consists of a number of placements of varying lengths. At the end of it, you’ll move into a substantive position within the business.

Once you have decided which programme best aligns with your passions and interests submit your CV and cover letter for Babcock to review.

If your application passes the initial review, depending on what programme you have applied for, you’ll be invited to complete a number of assessments. For Advanced/Foundation level apprentices, this includes: an online assessment and an assessment centre. For higher/Modern or Degree/Graduate level apprentice programmes, this includes: an online assessment, a one-way video interview, and an assessment centre.

If you pass each stage of the recruitment process and are amongst the strongest performing candidates, we will offer you a place on our apprenticeship programme.

Video interviews allow us to assess your skills, motivation, and suitability for the role in a fair and consistent way. They also give you flexibility to complete the interview at a time and place that suits you.

You’ll be sent a secure link to an online platform where you’ll answer a series of questions. Don’t worry though! You can try out the technology, practice answering sample questions, and get comfortable before you start your actual interview.

You’ll record your responses on camera – usually with a set time limit for preparation and for your answer.

After each assessment stage, your results will be reviewed by our trained assessors who will score your responses against the role criteria. You’ll then be informed of the outcome and next steps by email.

For higher/Modern or Degree/Graduate level apprentice programmes the application window opens in October with continual assessments running until May. For Entry Level Apprenticeship programmes the recruitment window opens in December with continual assessments until May.

We encourage you to explore all your options and apply to the programme that best aligns with your passions and interests. While you can apply to more than one programme, we will prioritise and progress your application based on your first-choice programme.

If the programme you apply for is oversubscribed, we’ll contact you regarding other programmes that we would be able to consider you for.

At Babcock, we understand that AI tools can be useful when preparing your application for example, to check grammar, improve clarity, or organise your ideas. We’re happy for you to use AI if it’s done ethically and doesn’t misrepresent who you are or what you can do. Your application should still be your own work, showing your real skills, experiences, and motivations. Think of AI as a helper, not a replacement – we want to get to know you.

If you require reasonable adjustments, for example, extra time to answer questions, let us know as soon as possible using the contact details in your invitation.
