Naval Architecture Graduate Programme
Location: Rosyth, Scotland
Sector/Business unit: Marine
My graduate programme, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
After graduating from university with a degree in Naval Architecture, I was keen to stay in Scotland and focused on local opportunities. I was clear that I wanted to work for a large, stable company involved in high-profile, complex projects where I could make a meaningful impact – such as the aircraft carriers and the construction of the Royal Navy Type 31 frigates.
Before applying, I didn’t know much about Babcock, but as I progressed through the recruitment process, I took the time to research the company in more detail. Several projects caught my attention, and I was particularly drawn to the graduate programme’s strong developmental support and the variety of day-to-day work it offered.
What appealed to me most was the breadth of experiences available. I saw how working on a diverse range of projects and placements would help me build a broad foundation of knowledge and develop different skills. I also believed that this variety would create greater opportunities for both personal and professional development, supporting my journey towards chartership.
My favourite part of the programme:
My favourite part of the programme so far has been the structure and variety. I’ve completed three three-month placements and have already worked on a wide range of projects and had some fantastic experiences – from ferry dry dockings and supporting minehunter vessels to spending time in the engine rooms of the Type 31 frigates.
The variety keeps the work engaging and means I’ve had the chance to meet and learn from people from all sorts of backgrounds and disciplines – it’s a great foundation for my career. Line managers actively encourage you to take ownership of tasks, work things out independently, and then provide helpful advice and feedback so you can improve with each assignment.
My most rewarding project/experience:
During one of my placements, I was taught the procedure for drydocking a vessel. I was given reference material and asked to complete the necessary calculations. These were reviewed, and I was given constructive feedback on how to refine and correct them.
I repeated this process for a few different vessels, improving each time – completing the calculations more quickly and to a higher standard. Eventually, I was trusted to complete the full procedure myself, working closely with the diving team, lifting team, and dockmaster to ensure everything went smoothly. It was incredibly rewarding to put what I’d learnt into practice and to see real progress in my capabilities.
My work-life balance:
I really value the flexibility my programme offers – it gives me more time and freedom at the weekend to relax and enjoy myself. I can also work from home when needed, and Babcock makes this easy by providing high-quality IT equipment. Managers are supportive, communicative, and easy to reach online. Working hours are somewhat flexible too. For example, if I need to step out for a couple of hours for an appointment, managers are happy to accommodate, allowing me to make up the time later. My holiday requests are approved promptly, and there’s some flexibility around start and finish times as well.
My development:
Senior naval architects and line managers provide useful documents and templates to help guide you towards chartership, along with practical tips on how to complete them and track your progress.
Babcock also offers a wide range of professional development opportunities, including online training and sessions that go beyond technical skills, covering things like stress management and mental health.
You’re encouraged to build your network, and with each placement, you set clear goals with your manager. These are reviewed regularly to keep you on track and help you keep growing your knowledge and skills.
Babcock puts a lot of effort into making sure graduates get a solid understanding of the different roles available across the business. With varied placements, strong early career support, and a focus on personal development, it’s a great place to start a career in naval architecture.
