Sector/Business unit: Nuclear

My graduate programme, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I chose the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Programme at Babcock after completing my degree in the same field. A friend had joined Babcock a year before me on the Electrical Engineering Graduate Programme and he was really enjoying it, so he suggested I apply too.

Initially, I didn’t really know what sector I wanted to work in, but as I learned more about Babcock and delved deeper into the industry, I became increasingly excited about the opportunities for me to learn, grow and contribute to something really important.

My favourite part of the programme:
My favourite part of the programme has been meeting so many different people. As a graduate, you’re part of a group of people all experiencing the same learning curves, so it’s easy to make friends. I’ve met some fantastic people who joined the programme at the same time as me and we’ve spent a lot of time together outside of work as well.

The people I’ve met through the various projects I’ve worked on have been really nice and incredibly supportive. Lot of people are willing to share their knowledge and experience, which is something I’ve really appreciated.

My most rewarding project/experience:
I’ve had many positive experiences, but the most rewarding project was a six-month period as a project manager overseeing the refit of a key system inside a submarine. The pace of the work and the significance of the project made things incredibly exciting. At first it felt very out of the ordinary to be working on something so important and to be given so much responsibility, but I quickly felt at home with the project and enjoyed working with my team.

There were several proud moments when my work was used and trusted by senior colleagues. It was very rewarding to know that I’d contributed to such a significant project.

My work-life balance:
Babcock is excellent at supporting work-life balance. They promote agile working, giving you the flexibility to work from home or on-site. And because they have different hubs across the country, you can even work in an office environment when you’re not near your main site. Every manager I’ve had has been really understanding about finding work-life balance – they know that flexible working supports our overall well-being.
While some roles require you to be on-site, there are plenty of options to help you fit work around your personal life.

My development:
Babcock is committed to supporting your professional and personal growth. Upon joining, you’re assigned a mentor to guide you through your career, ensuring you’re on the right path for success and supporting your chartership and professional registration goals. Additionally, numerous development courses are available to enhance skills such as communication, personal branding, goal setting, and resilience.
I’ve learned that if you can see an opportunity to take part in something that will help your development and support your growth, then Babcock are willing to support you.

What advice would you give to someone applying for a space on the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Programme?
Imposter Syndrome is common when starting a new job or entering a new industry. I experienced it myself when I first joined Babcock – everyone around me seemed more knowledgeable and experiences. Of course, this wasn’t really the case and I soon found out I wasn’t the only one feeling that way! My advice to someone entering the industry for the first time is to remember that you’re not expected to know everything right away. You were hired for your skills, and you are valued by the company and your team.

The graduate programme is designed to add experience to the skills you already have while further developing those skills. It may sound cliché, but your career is what you make of it. Some opportunities will come to you, but many of the best ones arise from being engaged and asking questions.
