Mechanical Fitter Apprentice
Location: Devonport, Plymouth, England
Sector/Business unit: Nuclear
My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I am a Mechanical Fitter Apprentice based at Devonport. I chose to transition from my previous career as a chef and pursue my lifelong interest in mechanical engineering at Babcock. I have always felt most comfortable in hands-on roles – taking things apart, fixing them, and putting them back together – solving real-world problems, particularly in complex environments.
This apprenticeship allows me to apply skills developed in my previous career in a new setting, while also learning new techniques and gaining experiences specific to my trade. Babcock has provided the opportunity to work toward a recognised qualification while earning a living, and to focus on achieving my long-term career goals.
My favourite part of the programme:
My favourite part so far has been my current placement, where I’ve had the chance to really get stuck in and learn on the job. I’m developing and practising skills that will be essential throughout my career, such as fault finding and diagnosis.
Another aspect of the programme I enjoy is how willing everyone I’ve worked with is to share their expertise and knowledge – whether it’s answering simple questions or taking the time to explain and demonstrate complex topics and processes. They genuinely want to help others succeed.
My most rewarding project/experience:
One of the most rewarding projects so far was during the first year of my apprenticeship, when our entire team worked together to completely disassemble a large engine down to its core components. Watching everyone take on their roles, communicate, and solve problems along the way gave me a real glimpse of what the rest of the apprenticeship would be like, even if on a smaller scale.
Another experience I’ve found fascinating is my current placement in radiation waste maintenance. Here, I help maintain systems that safely handle, process, and treat radioactive waste, adding another layer of complexity to my role – which I really enjoy. This work also allows me to contribute to ensuring Babcock minimises its environmental impact and maintains a safe working environment, giving me a strong sense of purpose that I find very rewarding.
My work-life balance:
My role as a mechanical fitter apprentice offers a great work-life balance – something I specifically changed careers for. Once I finish my day shift, I still have plenty of time to enjoy my hobbies and spend quality time with my partner and family. My placement also allows enough time between jobs to work on coursework or college assignments, ensuring that work doesn’t come home with me.
I also have regular check-ins with my apprenticeship development advisor to discuss how things are going and whether I need any support – not just in the workplace but at home too. This is something I really appreciate, especially as an older apprentice. Knowing that there’s someone looking out for you and able to point you toward financial, physical health, or pastoral support gives me peace of mind and allows me to focus on what matters most – both at work and in my personal life.
My development:
My development at Babcock has been well supported through college theory days, on-the-job training, and specialist courses tailored to specific projects or working environments. My placement team also plays a key role by guiding me on the job, providing constructive feedback, and ensuring I have opportunities to contribute my own ideas to projects.
Everyone is approachable, which makes it easy to ask for information, support, or additional training when needed.
