Slinger Apprentice
Location: Devonport, Plymouth, England
Sector/Business unit: Nuclear
My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I’m a first-year Slinger Apprentice, and I chose Babcock because of the opportunities – the jobs, qualifications, and work experience available. At the end of my apprenticeship, I will have three years’ experience, alongside zero debt, unlike if I had gone to university.
I’m an independent person and knew I would thrive in an environment where I can be busy, on my feet, and earning money towards my future.
My favourite part of the programme:
The best part of the programme for me is the hands-on experience. Coming from an academic A-Level background, I find it far more engaging to work practically, towards tangible goals. In Lifting Services, you’re never on your own – there’s always a team around you to ask questions, share knowledge, and socialise with. At the end of the day, I go home feeling proud of what I’ve achieved and ready to take on the next day.
My most rewarding project/experience:
My most rewarding experience so far has been working on our NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) qualifications. It’s great to learn together as a group – setting up the area, watching each other try the practical elements, and then studying for the written tests. It’s also fantastic because we gain experience with all types of lifting equipment.
My work-life balance:
The work-life balance at Babcock is excellent. The hours can start early, but that means we finish early too. I’m always home with time to go to the gym, cook, and enjoy plenty of downtime. Some jobs can feel like they take over your whole life and make you lose motivation to build healthy habits, but that’s not the case here. For apprentices, study leave is also essential. We get plenty of allowance to finish work early and spend time on assignments, as well as specified study days, so I never have to hand anything in half-finished.
My development:
Apprentices at Babcock receive loads of support. I have a manager, training officer, and apprentice development advisor, all of whom I can contact directly if I need help. We have termly meetings to recap what’s been happening and what I’ve been doing. Similarly, they’re proactive about sending us on courses to gain more qualifications. Having these extra qualifications really makes it feel like the time I’ve invested in the course is worthwhile.
