Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Engineering Degree Apprentice
Location: Leicester, England
Sector/Business unit: Nuclear
My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I am currently working towards my Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering. I have always had an interest in engineering, but I was initially unsure which discipline would suit me best. During school, I particularly enjoyed the electrical modules in physics and my computer science classes, which sparked my passion for electrical engineering.
With this interest in mind, I explored different career development options and discovered apprenticeships. They offered an exciting opportunity to learn on the job while gaining qualifications, all while making a meaningful impact on the world around me.
While researching apprenticeship opportunities, I discovered careers at Babcock. Initially, I didn’t know much about the company, so I took the time to learn about their work, purpose, and principles. I was impressed by their involvement in large, nationally critical operations and their purpose of “creating a safe and secure world, together.” In particular, Cavendish Nuclear stood out to me, as there were opportunities available near me and their work seemed both interesting and rewarding.
After reading about the apprenticeship programme and hearing the experiences of previous apprentices, I was eager to apply. During my interview, I immediately felt welcome and comfortable, and I learned even more about the programme. When I was offered the role, there was only one natural answer: yes.
My favourite part of the programme:
My favourite part of the programme so far has been the opportunity to learn from knowledgeable professionals across multiple teams within the business. I have completed several placements in different disciplines, gaining insight into how these teams collaborate to deliver a complete project.
I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to contribute to live projects, speak directly with customers, and deliver meaningful outputs. It’s made me incredibly proud to see the impact of my work, and it’s motivated me to keep learning, refining my ideas, and growing professionally.
Additionally, I have taken part in numerous training opportunities that have supported both my personal and professional growth, helping me make a lasting impression in the teams I work with.
My most rewarding project/experience:
Alongside my core responsibilities, I have been leading an innovation and development project focused on improving business processes. Taking ownership of this initiative has been incredibly rewarding, as it allowed me to strengthen my leadership and problem-solving skills. I successfully developed the project concept, presented it to senior leadership, and received valuable feedback on my ideas.
The project opened doors to additional training opportunities and encouraged me to challenge myself and inspire those around me. Watching the idea evolve from an initial concept into a tangible project that is now in development has been extremely fulfilling.
My work/life balance:
Babcock has been extremely supportive of my work-life balance, providing the flexibility I need to manage personal commitments alongside professional responsibilities. I have regular meetings with my line manager and mentors to review my work-life balance, and I feel comfortable and confident reaching out whenever I need support.
This flexibility has been hugely beneficial, giving me the time to volunteer with my local Scout group and make a positive impact in my community.
My development:
Babcock has consistently provided an excellent platform for my career growth, offering opportunities that support both my role and personal development. I’ve been able to prioritise my progression through access to valuable training, such as First Aid and IOSH courses, which have strengthened my understanding of health and safety.
Through my apprenticeship, I’ve also attended courses focused on building resilience, managing workloads, and performing at a high level – skills I apply both professionally and personally.
I’ve benefited from mentors and buddies who guide me towards achieving my aspirations and becoming the engineer I strive to be. Their support in work-related discussions and skill development has been invaluable. Furthermore, my team consistently invests time in my growth, ensuring I gain the knowledge and experience needed to contribute effectively to live projects.
