Slinger Apprentice
Location: Devonport, Plymouth, England
Sector/Business unit: Nuclear/Marine
My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I’m currently working towards a Level 3 qualification in Construction Lifting, Positioning and Installing Structures, Plant and Equipment. And I chose this apprenticeship because I wanted to challenge myself and try something new. Although I already had a strong background in the marine industry, I hadn’t really had the chance to fully develop my abilities or show what I was capable of. Working at Babcock has given me that opportunity.
I’ve discovered how much I thrive through hands-on learning, and this apprenticeship gives me the chance to develop new skills while earning at the same time.
My favourite part of the programme:
My favourite part of the programme has been the chance to work with such a diverse group of people, each bringing their own skills, perspectives, and interests. I’ve met some incredible individuals, many of whom I know will be friends for life.
Being able to work together as a team, communicate well, and still have fun along the way is something I didn’t expect to fit together so naturally – but it has, and it’s made the whole experience even more enjoyable.
My most rewarding project/experience:
One of my most rewarding experiences has been securing my apprenticeship itself. Knowing how many people applied for the role, I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity.
Since starting, I’ve had the chance to complete several courses, including NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) Slinger and Signaller, as well as Rigging and Fleeting Loads. These experiences have helped me build confidence and develop skills that will stay with me throughout my career.
My work-life balance:
My work–life balance is very good. Working 35 hours a week gives me the freedom to spend quality time with my family at home. Finishing at lunchtime on Fridays provides extra time to recharge, which makes the week feel more balanced.
I also have a dedicated college day each week to focus on coursework. I’m given plenty of time to complete assignments, with lots of support from both my college tutor and my manager whenever I need it. This balance between work, study, and personal life has made my apprenticeship both manageable and enjoyable.
My development:
My personal development has always been a key priority throughout my apprenticeship. I have regular meetings with my college mentors and Apprentice Development Advisors (ADAs) where I can ask questions and raise any issues. These meetings also give me the chance to highlight my strengths, whether that’s in coursework, personal life, or how I’m developing in the workplace.
As an apprentice, I have the opportunity to work alongside experienced people in the same sector who are always willing to share their knowledge with me. On the job, I’m learning all the time, and the skills I pick up in placement can be taken back and used in my coursework.
I often find myself being pushed to achieve my best, and there is plenty of room for me to grow and progress throughout the apprenticeship. It’s a journey that challenges me but also gives me the support I need to succeed.
