Welding Apprentice
Location: Rosyth, Scotland
Sector/Business unit: Marine

My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I am a second-year Welding Apprentice based in Rosyth, currently working in the build hall, where Type 31 frigates are being constructed for the Royal Navy as part of a major shipbuilding programme.

I chose to work at Babcock because I wanted a job that involved a practical skill – something I could learn, develop, and eventually master. Babcock is a reputable company with strong principles, and it’s a workplace where I always feel safe and supported.

The apprenticeship programme is well organised and offers a clear path to becoming a qualified tradesperson. There are also opportunities to expand your knowledge further, such as progressing onto the HNC course.

My favourite part of the programme:
My favourite part of the programme is working alongside qualified tradespeople who are professional and treat me as a valued member of the team. The Type 31 Programme gives me the chance to gain first-hand experience with various tasks and teaches me how to approach and solve problems on-the-job.

Another aspect that I really enjoy is the apprenticeship development programme. It gives apprentices the opportunity to experience activities outside of work that they might not otherwise try – such as hillwalking and climbing.

My most rewarding project/experience:
My most rewarding experience at Babcock so far has been the time I spent in the welding centre. Working and learning there transformed my overall welding ability, making me more confident and competent.

The supervisors were a great help – they showed me techniques that aided my style of welding.

My work-life balance:
I have a positive work-life balance at Babcock. In my role, we benefit from a four-day working week, which gives me more time to do things I enjoy, like going to the gym and hillwalking. Even on a normal workday, I still have enough time after work to exercise or relax.

If I want to take on extra work and don’t mind giving up some weekend time, I have that option too.

My development:
My development at Babcock is supported by a wide range of people. The Emerging Talent team is always there to help if I have questions about my apprenticeship, and they often send information about opportunities to gain more experience.

In production, tradespeople and supervisors are always willing to point me in the right direction and answer any questions I have about the jobs I’m working on or anything I don’t understand.
