Business Winning Degree Apprentice
Location: Warrington, England
Sector/Business unit: Nuclear
My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I joined Babcock’s Cavendish Nuclear business as a Level 6 Business Winning Apprentice in 2023. I didn’t grow up knowing I wanted to work in the nuclear industry, but I was looking for a career with purpose and long-term opportunities. When I found out more about Cavendish Nuclear and its role in national security and nuclear safety, it felt like the right place to build a meaningful career.
I chose this apprenticeship because it allows me to gain a degree while working, and I was drawn to the Business Winning role for its focus on people, communication, and strategy. Babcock stood out to me because of the strong support it offers apprentices and the opportunity to develop and grow from day one.
My favourite part of the programme:
My favourite part of the programme has been the variety. My role has given me experience in business winning, marketing and communications, social impact and events, which has helped me find out what I enjoy and where I want to develop. I’ve also had the chance to get involved in things outside my day job, from Be Kind volunteering days to industry events and early careers networking. I enjoy working with different people across the business and being trusted with real responsibility while still having the support from my team when I need it.
My most rewarding project/experience:
One of my most rewarding experiences was being asked to take part in a marketing campaign where I interviewed our Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer during National Apprenticeship Week. It pushed me out of my comfort zone but gave me a lot of confidence. I also enjoy helping run Cavendish Nuclear’s weekly internal communications as it allows me to learn and share positive stories from across the business.
Another highlight was attending Nuclear Week in Parliament, where I met my MP and industry leaders and heard about the future of nuclear in the UK. These opportunities have helped me grow professionally and personally and made me feel part of something bigger.
My work-life balance:
I’ve had a really positive work-life balance during my apprenticeship. The hybrid working approach makes it easier to manage university work alongside my role, and the flexibility from my team means I can plan my time well. The team culture is supportive and understanding, and I feel trusted to do my job while still being able to switch off outside working hours.
My development:
The Emerging Talent team has been incredible in supporting my development over the past two and a half years, both at work and through university. The Apprentice Development Programme and the Graduate Development Programme have played a key role in helping me grow professionally and personally, offering a wide range of workshops focused on mental health, personal wellbeing, and self-development.
Through university, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of business and sales, and I’ve been able to apply that learning directly to my role. One of the biggest areas of growth for me has been personal development – I’ve really come out of my shell since joining Cavendish. I’ve learned the importance of pushing myself and stepping outside my comfort zone, and that my growth has only been possible thanks to the support from the Business Winning team, my line manager, and the Emerging Talent team.
