Engineering Support Technician Apprentice
Location: Devonport, Plymouth, England
Sector/Business unit: Nuclear

My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:

I am currently undertaking a Level 3 Apprenticeship as an Engineering Support Technician Apprentice. I chose this role because it provides a broad range of knowledge across multiple areas of engineering, including both electrical and mechanical disciplines. I was also attracted to the opportunity to go on board and see the submarines in person, allowing me to witness my work come to life.

Another reason I selected this apprenticeship is the excellent career progression it offers. There are many positions you can move into once you are fully qualified, making it an ideal choice for anyone seeking a role that can grow with them.

I have always had a strong interest in engineering, and Babcock is a well-established, secure company that offers fantastic opportunities to learn and develop while gaining hands-on experience in the workplace. We’re always contributing to meaningful projects, supporting national and international defence through the production of maritime vessels at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

My favourite part of the programme:

I’ve loved my apprenticeship so far, but my favourite part has been getting into the office and completing work that directly contributes to the submarines currently undergoing maintenance in the dockyard. This gives me the chance to learn about the various software and processes used to ensure engineers on board have the correct knowledge and documentation to complete tasks to the highest standard.

My most rewarding project/experience:

So far, the most rewarding experience has been going on board the submarines. It shows you that you’re part of something much bigger than your immediate team in the office. You see the hard work that goes into ensuring the submarines leave the dockyard in the best and safest possible condition. It also highlights how your own contribution impacts the project as a whole – without your dedication, the work simply couldn’t happen.

My work/life balance:

Babcock offers a great work-life balance. Not only do they provide a strong network of colleagues within and across sections, helping you build a good social life at work, but the early start means you finish earlier than most workplaces. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy hobbies and socialise outside of work. Plus, at Devonport, you get a half-day on Fridays, which means an extended weekend to relax and recharge.

My development:

Babcock consistently supports my development in many ways. The Emerging Talent team is always available to help throughout college and placements, and they provide training to ensure a smooth transition into the workplace.

They also make sure you receive all the necessary training for access and health and safety, so you can complete your job confidently and safely. Furthermore, placement managers and their teams are incredibly supportive – they want to see you succeed. Many of them know what it’s like to be an apprentice, so they can offer guidance on completing college work alongside your role.
