Fabricating Apprentice
Location: Rosyth, Scotland
Sector/Business unit: Marine
My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I chose to become a Fabricating Apprentice with Babcock because I’ve always been fascinated by the process of turning raw materials into something purposeful and functional. There’s a real satisfaction in transforming a simple piece of metal into a vital component of a larger project.
As an apprentice, I get to develop hands-on skills in cutting, forming, and assembling parts for major builds like the Type 31 frigates. It’s incredibly rewarding to see my work in the workshop become part of something much bigger.
Babcock’s purpose – creating a safe and secure world, together – really resonates with me. Knowing that the work I do contributes to national defence and supports the Royal Navy gives it real meaning. Being part of a company with strong principles and a supportive learning environment makes the apprenticeship even more fulfilling.
My favourite part of the programme:
My favourite part of the fabrication apprenticeship is the opportunity to work and learn alongside experienced tradespeople. Their support creates engaging and fast-paced learning experiences. The sense of community at Babcock is strong, and I really enjoy collaborating with skilled workers who help me grow in my role.
Teamwork is a key part of life at Babcock. It’s incredibly rewarding to work towards a shared goal in a team environment that builds both productivity and a strong work ethic. Overall, I love working with other trades to grow my skills, learn new things, and contribute to meaningful projects.
My most rewarding project/experience:
One of my most rewarding experiences was working in the light fabrication team, fabricating components for the Type 31 frigates – particularly the walkways installed on the ships. Working closely with my tradesperson enhanced my skills in fabrication techniques such as burning, cutting, and forming.
Watching our work come together was incredibly satisfying, especially knowing that it would play a key role in the functionality and safety of the ship. This project not only improved my technical abilities but also showed me the importance of teamwork in achieving shared goals.
My work-life balance:
At Babcock, I feel fully supported when it comes to work-life balance. In my role at the Rosyth site, this includes physical health, mental wellbeing, and safety. We’re supported in all these areas to ensure we go home safe every day.
Babcock operates to high health and safety standards and provides regular health check appointments to support employee wellbeing. There’s also great mental health support available, including practical resources like workbooks and access to a team of approachable advisors and managers. I always feel safe, listened to, and supported in balancing both life and work.
My development:
My personal development has always been a priority during my apprenticeship. Whether through dedicated college lecturers or my tradesperson on-site, I’ve received individual support to enhance my skills and performance, both in the classroom and in the workshop.
Working alongside experienced professionals has provided high-quality, practical training that has strengthened my confidence and capabilities. We’re also encouraged to set our sights higher through regular reviews with our advisors, where we reflect on our progress and define new goals. This continuous development ensures I’m always learning and advancing in my apprenticeship journey.
So far, my time at Babcock has been both engaging and rewarding. There are always new opportunities to develop and grow, which keeps the work exciting. It’s also incredibly fulfilling to contribute to the construction of Royal Navy ships, knowing that what I do has real purpose. Babcock is highly supportive of its apprentices, and the high-quality experience offers a wide range of valuable learning opportunities.
