Mechanical Engineering Graduate Programme
Location: Devonport, Plymouth
Sector/Business unit: Marine
My graduate programme, why I chose it and why I chose Babcock:
I chose Babcock because it operates within a secure industry and gives me a sense of purpose, knowing that the work I undertake has a global impact. I was particularly inspired by Babcock’s commitment to reducing emissions and supporting the nation’s journey to net-zero, as well as their dedication to increasing diversity in engineering – a crucial factor for fostering innovation, creativity, and high performance.
Babcock’s six guiding principles—be curious, think outcomes, be kind, collaborate, be courageous, and own & deliver— resonated with me, especially as a naturally inquisitive individual. I was excited to be part of an organisation that lives by these values, aligning closely with my goals for personal and professional development.
I opted for the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Programme at Babcock because it offers numerous placements over two years, many of which are individually chosen, allowing me to tailor the programme to suit my career aspirations.
My decision to undertake the graduate programme at Babcock was also influenced by my positive experiences during an undergraduate industrial placement and a summer internship with the company.
My favourite part of the programme:
Without a doubt, my favourite aspect of the programme is the wide range of placements available. I’ve had the opportunity to work in support functions, engineering and non-engineering departments, and across different areas such as ships, submarines, facilities, and health and safety.
My most rewarding project/experience:
The most rewarding project I’ve worked on during the graduate programme was in my first placement as a project manager within Nuclear Facilities. This role involved managing the creation of a radiological controlled area (an area with a medium risk of localised surface contamination) to support the submarine programme. I was given ownership of specific projects and tasks, gaining vital project management skills that were not covered during my university studies and are not typically learnt as an engineer.
My work-life balance:
I really appreciate Babcock’s commitment to promoting a healthy work-life balance, as I strongly believe that work should not be the sole focus of life. Babcock encourages agile working, providing flexibility beyond core working hours and offering options for remote or on-site work depending on workload and business requirements. For example, I prefer working from home on days filled with online meetings, but I find being on-site more beneficial when collaborating with team members or other departments.
I also enjoy attending the graduate socials and events organised throughout the year, which offer a great opportunity to connect with other graduates on the programme.
My development:
My personal and professional development are well-supported through the Graduate Development Programme and Chartership Mentoring Scheme. The Graduate Development Programme helps me learn to manage stress and build resilience, while the Chartership Mentoring Scheme offers one-on-one career advice from a chartered engineer who guides me through my career and the chartership process.
