Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Technician Apprentice
Location: Devonport, Plymouth, England
Sector/Business unit: Nuclear
My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
An NDT technician’s role is crucial to the success of projects at Babcock, and I wanted to be part of that. I also wanted a hands-on job, and as an NDT technician, I get plenty of practical experience on a day-to-day basis. I believe learning a profession through practical experience is far more valuable than studying it alone, and Babcock offered me the opportunity to do exactly that.
I also chose Babcock because of the excellent career progression available here, as well as the job security that comes with working for such a reputable company.
My favourite part of the programme:
The best part of the programme is the travel opportunities. To complete my apprenticeship, I need to pass an assessment in Sheffield, which means I’ll get to see more of England. I also attend conferences in other parts of the country, such as Bristol – something I wouldn’t ordinarily experience elsewhere. This isn’t just during my apprenticeship; once I’m qualified, I’ll be expected to travel to different locations for courses that will further develop my expertise in NDT. It’s a unique opportunity, and I plan to make the most of it as I progress through my apprenticeship and career.
My most rewarding project/experience:
I’ve only been here a few months, but I’ve already had the opportunity to go on board a ship. Being able to step on deck and contribute to the overall completion of the project was incredibly rewarding, knowing that the ship will go on to serve our armed forces abroad and help keep people safe.
It was also valuable because I got to see how the entire project operates and how different roles work together to ensure everything runs smoothly and efficiently. The learning I’ve gained from this experience is just as rewarding, as I believe this is the best way to understand my job. Observing people carry out their tasks in real scenarios helps me grasp the bigger picture and deepen my knowledge even further.
My work-life balance:
The work-life balance at Babcock is great. I have time to enjoy the things I love, like going to the gym or spending time with my dog. The schedule allows plenty of time to rest and recharge, so I’m never exhausted the next day.
My development:
Babcock does many things well, but supporting your development throughout your apprenticeship is at the top of that list. You receive plenty of one-to-one guidance from dedicated apprenticeship advisors and your line manager, who are always ready to help with any challenges you face. The colleagues you work alongside are also fantastic at explaining things clearly, which really accelerates your learning.
There are also resources available if you need to talk about personal matters – because sometimes getting something off your chest is essential for growth in your role. This level of support makes a huge difference and ensures you feel confident and capable as you progress.
