CNC Machining Apprentice
Location: Devonport, Plymouth, England
Sector/Business unit: Nuclear

My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I chose to do an apprenticeship with Babcock as a CNC Machining Apprentice because the company has a long, prestigious history and is a highly respected engineering firm. A friend who completed an apprenticeship here recommended it to me – he really enjoyed the experience and has since become fully qualified, which made me even more eager to join.

Babcock’s apprenticeship programme not only offers a competitive salary that increases each year but also provides excellent training to help apprentices build the skills they need to succeed and complete their qualification.

What I like most about this apprenticeship is that I’m gaining the skills to become a fully qualified Machining Technician – all while earning a salary. I’ve had a passion for design and manufacturing for several years, so this apprenticeship felt like the perfect fit for my interests and career goals.

My favourite part of the programme:

I really enjoy working alongside my colleagues in the workshop, where everyone is friendly and helpful. I’m learning a lot about the different methods and processes involved in CNC machining, and I appreciate the variety of jobs we get to work on.

Before starting my apprenticeship in CNC machining, I didn’t fully understand the entire manufacturing process for different components. So far, I’ve been shown and helped manufacture a wide range of parts using the CNC machines in the workshop – some of which I never imagined I’d be making. I’ve also learned about the various manufacturing stages and the different tooling required to make it all happen.

Outside the workshop, I’ve volunteered at several Babcock careers events, including a careers fair earlier this year at Plymouth Argyle Football Club. I really enjoyed speaking with attendees about my sector within Babcock and sharing an overview of the work we do and the various job opportunities available.

My most rewarding project/experience:
One of the most rewarding experiences so far was a week-long residential trip at the end of my first apprenticeship year, held at Skern Lodge Outdoor Activity Centre in North Devon. During this trip, I took part in team-building exercises and worked closely with people I hadn’t previously met. This helped me improve my teamwork skills, such as effective communication, and set personal goals for myself. Overall, it was a very rewarding experience.

My work-life balance:
To support my work-life balance, I have regular review sessions with my Apprentice Development Advisor to discuss how I’m progressing at work and to check in on my personal situation, ensuring everything is going well. My First Line Manager also checks in daily to ensure I’m physically and mentally fit for work. When I was on sick leave this year due to an injury sustained on holiday, Babcock was very supportive and helped arrange a gradual return to work.

My development:
My development at Babcock is supported by several people, including my First Line Manager, Apprentice Development Advisor, and college assessor. We have regular catch-ups to ensure everything is on track and that I’m making good progress toward completing my apprenticeship qualification within the four-year timeframe.

Additionally, during my second year, I have been shadowing fully qualified machinists in the workshop, which has given me valuable hands-on experience operating the CNC machines we use.
