Mechanical Fitter Apprentice
Location: Devonport, Plymouth, England
Sector/Business unit: Nuclear
My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
It was only in the last couple of years that apprenticeships really came onto my radar. I was having a conversation with a young apprentice and asked him how his apprenticeship was going. I commented that it was fantastic that young people had these types of opportunities. He then pointed out to me that apprenticeships are open to all ages. At that moment – at the age of 49 – I had a lightbulb moment and said, “I’m doing that!”
Before applying, I looked into Babcock and felt that the principles the company supports and promotes align perfectly with my own values. Babcock is a company that truly invests in its people, guiding them through their journey – whether that means staying in a particular role or developing new skills to transition into different opportunities.
My favourite part of the programme:
What I’ve enjoyed most is learning an entirely new set of skills and having the opportunity to keep growing through continuous learning.
While the daily tasks may be similar, no two days are ever the same. That variety keeps the job interesting and engaging.
My most rewarding project/experience:
A personal breakthrough for me was returning to education. Maths, in particular, has always been something that held me back throughout my working life. My determination to apply for the apprenticeship gave me the drive to face that fear head-on.
This experience has taught me not to dismiss opportunities – because they’re often far less daunting than they seem and can turn out to be incredibly rewarding.
My work-life balance:
In my previous employment, I often had to work extra hours or take on a second job just to make ends meet. When I finally had time off, I was so exhausted that I lacked the motivation to do anything. It felt like I was stuck in a never-ending cycle.
Now, everything has changed dramatically. I can plan ahead, enjoy my days off, and spend quality time pursuing hobbies and interests. As a result, I stay focused and productive throughout the week, which really boosts my job satisfaction.
My development:
My role as a mechanical fitter apprentice is completely new to me. I’m really enjoying the academic side, but most importantly, I love getting hands-on with the practical aspects of the job.
Some of the qualified fitters I’ve worked with have been incredibly inspiring. They’ve shared their knowledge with me and have been very supportive throughout my journey.
