My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I have always been interested in pulling things apart and figuring out how they work. I’ve also always wanted a job where I can work with my hands and solve interesting problems. Through sheer coincidence, I met somebody at welding night classes who mentioned there was a communications engineering apprenticeship opportunity at their workplace. After learning more about the apprenticeship and Babcock, I felt it was something I would really enjoy, so I applied. Since starting, I’ve realised it’s the perfect career for me.
My favourite part of the programme:
My favourite part of the programme is the feeling of satisfaction I get when resolving complex faults. I work on unusual and bespoke equipment that I hadn’t heard of before working here, and I am trusted to work on it and devise solutions. I get to learn something every day, whilst having the trust of my colleagues to fix issues in a timely manner.
Another aspect I really enjoy is the social side – even though I work on a small site, my colleagues and I take part in many activities outside of work. For example, this weekend we’re going to a car show followed by a curry. It’s great to be part of a close-knit team – we all get on well, and it makes me look forward to going to work each day.
My most rewarding project/experience:
It’s very rewarding to work on equipment that plays a vital role in UK defence. I also value the trust my colleagues have in me to get the job done. Recently, when multiple issues arose at once, I was trusted to handle the pressure and resolve issues on my own, helping the site meet deadlines.
My work-life balance:
I’ve been able to work flexibly, especially when I’ve had a lot of assignment work. The company empowers my manager to adapt our daily schedules as needed. With initiatives like “be-kind days” and regular annual leave, I feel my work-life balance is great.
My development:
I have been well supported in my development at Babcock. The internal training team has been excellent, offering thorough training and additional support in any areas I have struggled with. My team on-site has supported my development massively, with my mentor and senior engineer putting in a lot of time to ensure I am learning the necessary skills, and my management team regularly checking in to make sure I am progressing steadily and gaining the knowledge I need.
